What to look forward to…

4 Nov

Here are a few things you can look forward to reading about when I have a spare moment to breathe:

- Review of Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffeneger…. along with my total “Books Read” count since Mid July of this year and what I’m reading now.

- A really fascinating story about someone’s experiences working with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.    (this is really excellent stuff)

- An update on Sajuka (and hopefully a preview of the website I’m designing for the project)

Do you ever…

Feel like you need a break from technology?

Feel like telling some one else they need a break from technology?

I do. Especially lately.

I haven’t watched television for several weeks (with the exception of catching the last 2 episodes of True Blood on the computer [which were fantastic, by the way]), but I mean, most people watch tv, what, 5-8 hours per day? So many people I know even watch tv when they’re going to bed. Even I used to do it.

But no more.

Instead, I’ve been reading. I read until I can’t keep my eyes open anymore and then I go to bed. I read instead of watching tv when I’m not doing anything else. Recently, I’ve been re-reading the Harry Potter books, but I’ve been reading them backwards. It started out as just re-reading the 7th book because the movie trailer was recently released… then I decided I would like to read the whole series again, but I’ve done that more times than I can count (literally). So I figured I’d switch it up this time. I’ve got to say, it’s really quite interesting because I pick up on things that I may have overlooked reading them normally. (I finished 7 and 6 and am currently half way through 5).

Anyway, taking a break from TV has been one of the best things I’ve done recently. I’m considering taking a break from the computer as well. I had a moment earlier today when I wanted to delete my facebook account and just be done with it, but I didn’t. I don’t REALLY want to delete my facebook, I’m just really tired of everyone talking about facebook all the time. Facebook facebook facebook. Marsha Marsha Marsha. Same concept. It’s literally gotten to the point that people are telling me what’s happening on my facebook page before I even have a chance to sign in. Give me a freakin break. I don’t live in front of the computer screen monitoring my facebook profile 24/7. And as far as I’m concerned, I think some people are starting to spend an unhealthy amount of time on the computer/internet/facebook.

I mean, really, how many hours per day do you think the average facebook user is logged on and actively using facebook? I don’t really think I even want to know.

So yeah, I think I just really would like a break from technology for a while. And this is coming from a self-proclaimed technology whore. Seriously.

Shut Up, Ladies.

Sexism? Really? Still?

Okay, I’m going to be honest here; feminists piss me off. They really do. “Wahh Wahh. We want equality.” And then, lo and behold, they’ve got “equality,” but “wahh, wahh, we want MORE.”

I was reading Newsweek this morning, and I came across their “Book Club,” which literally has a tag line that reads:

We Read It [So You Don’t Have To]”    → I will digress for a minute now. What the HELL? Are we really that lazy?

This is a post for another time. Back to the whiney women.

I was looking through the titles to see if there are any good books I should be READING, and this one jumped out at me: Enlightened Sexism by Susan J. Douglas.

This is what it said under the “What’s The Big Deal” section of the “Book Club”

Enlightened Sexism picks up where last year’s Shriver Report on the state of the
American woman left off, going beyond Shriver’s claim that the battle of the
sexes is over to show just how much it’s not. Sure, in 2010, women can play sports,
go to college, and get jobs previously reserved for men. But in exchange, we must
obsess about our faces, breasts, weight, and clothes. How’s that for progress?”

Okay. Now, how about lets get realistic for a second? Women are CRAZY. We’re always going to worry about or faces, breasts, weight, and clothes. We’re WOMEN. If some of us don’t worry about that, excellent, but that has absolutely NOTHING to do with sexism and women’s rights. Nothing.

How about this, ladies. If you want to be “equal,” truly 100% EQUAL, then stop complaining when a guy doesn’t hold the door open for you, or expects you to pay for your half of the dinner bill. How about maybe you pay the entire dinner bill for once? Hmm? Doesn’t sound good to you? Then shut up about having to wear a little make-up and not being “equal.”

Seriously.

Now, don’t get me wrong here. I’m all for equality. I really am. I just really don’t see how whining about wearing makeup and your weight are making progress. Did you know that women comprise 52% of the workforce? Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of women? So maybe, just maybe, worrying about your weight isn’t a BAD thing, since obesity can lead to heart disease. Gosh. Common sense. Who knew?

Liar

20 Aug

Okay, so call me a liar. I can’t help but post while on vacation.

Yesterday, we went parasailing (We= Michael, Myself, and Bobby… and then Matt, Jon, and Jess)  It was a lot of fun! I was actually pretty surprised at how smooth of a ride it was. The boat ride back into shore, however… not so smooth. I think I was feeling a little sick to begin with because of how much time I had spent in the sun earlier that day… but I started to feel really nauseus when we got back. I drank some water and ate some dinner, though, and I was fine.

The night before that, Bobby and I went for a midnight swim.. which was a LOT of fun.. so we convinced Mike and Matt to go with us last night. We were really psyched about it, until we heard that there are a lot of sharks around these waters. Personally, I didn’t care. We didn’t get eaten the night before, so I was fairly certain we wouldn’t get eaten if we went again.

After some convincing… we all ended up going for another midnight swim last night… and guess what… none of us got eaten by a shark. It was just, one again, a lot of fun.

The waves have been fantastic because of the impending Hurricane Bill… or whatever it’s called… So body surfing and Boogie Bording have been AMAZING these past few days. The waves were especially brutal this morning, but that’s half the fun.

I’ve also been reading my book, The Time Traveler’s Wife, and it is absolutely PHENOMENAL! The movie was GREAT but the book is even better, there’s just SO much more to it (which I knew there would be).

I’m in paradise… and I’m trying to convince Mike that we should buy a house here. HA, yeah right.

New Reading

17 Jul

So I’ve been buying a bunch of books for some summer reading.

Here are the books I’ve purchased so far:

Diary- Chuck Palahniuk

Snuff- Chuck Palahniuk

The Time Traveler’s Wife- Audrey Niffengger (I’m saving that one until after the movie comes out in August, because otherwise I’ll hate the movie.. and I LOVE Rachel McAdams so I don’t want to ruin that)

Goodnight Nobody- Jennifer Weiner

Best Friends Forever- Jennifer Weiner (Her newest novel)

I just started reading Best Friends Forever this afternoon. I’m already on pg. 80. It’s written very much in the style that I’m using in one of my novel’s (working title is simply: Lacey’s Story… but it’ll be better when I’m finished). I’m really enjoying it.

I have to admit that sometimes I find it difficult to follow because she doesn’t break paragraphs the way I’m used to, but other than that it’s been very enjoyable thus far. I definitely recommend it, it’s kind of like a drama/mystery with childhood flashbacks.. all about two best friends who stopped being friends but come together in a crisis. I haven’t gotten to why they stopped being friends but I feel it has something to do with a guy and a scandal. Surprise! Isn’t that why 90% of girls stop being friends?

Anyway, definitely check it out if you need some summer reading materials.
