Pandora

24 Jan

I posted a few weeks ago that Avatar was a fantastic movie, but that the trailers do it no justice. This still remains true, however I have stumbled upon a video of Sigourney Weaver explaining the world of Pandora.

I went to see the movie again last night. Still fantastic. (Although the group of people in the theater this time were incredibly RUDE.) If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I still recommend it. In the meantime, though, you can check out this video.

Africa, Updated

2 Jan

Tomorrow is the big day.

I’ll be waking up super early, picking up my fellow trip mates, and renting a car.

Following the rental, a 5 hour drive to Washington D.C. will ensue….so let’s hope for our sake it doesn’t decide to snow AGAIN.

When we arrive, we’ll catch our flight and, after about 8 hours, land in Dakar, Senegal. (Score for landing where they speak French!)

We’ll have a 12 hour lay over, after which we will take a considerably smaller plane to Gambia.

I’m very excited and some time after I get back (even though I’ve got to edit the entire movie… and the semester starts the day after we get home…) I’ll post a new photo gallery of the best pictures from the trip.

In the meantime, though, you can read all about the trip on my Bay Path Blog. I’ll be posting pictures and updates regularly during our two-week stay for the College Community to keep up with. I figure why post twice when I can just direct everyone over to my extension.

Happy 2010 to all!

Avatar = Amazing

1 Jan

I saw Avatar in 3D tonight.

Written and Directed by James Cameron (obviously LOVE him).

Music by James Horner (LOOOVE him…see my post personally thanking him for inspiring me)

It was a fantastic movie and I recommend seeing it. (Yeah, this is going to be another post where I try to convince you to go see this movie and assure you you’ll be a better person for it. Yeah, I do that a lot… it’s kind of my thing. But… I’m not lying. I promise.)

Forget about the fact that it’s a science fiction movie. If that’s not your thing… it doesn’t even matter. You’ll forget. You’ll get so wrapped up in the story… you’ll become so involved with the characters, that it becomes irrelevant.

It’s a long movie, but you don’t even realize it because you’re so caught up in it.

This movie made me even more disgusted with war than I already was. It drew a lot of parallels to what we did to the Native American people. It also brought in modern warfare to draw parallels to what we’re doing NOW… and what we’ll no doubt continue to do.

It also cleverly mentioned how, in 2134(or something to that effect), we had managed to destroy our own planet and had to go elsewhere. And sure enough, we managed to destroy a good portion of that planet, too.

Pandora, the planet the movie takes place on… is just immaculately conceived. It’s beautiful. I’m nothing but impressed with James Cameron. I wish I could explain the beauty in words but I just can’t see myself doing it any justice. Truly.

The trailers do the movie NO justice. I wasn’t even interested in seeing the movie based on the trailer, but I love James Cameron and I had heard nothing but good reviews, so I gave it a shot. You should too. The movie came out mid December… and the theater was STILL packed to the maximum tonight.

When the film ended, the theater erupted in applause.

We sat through most of the credits to see who the music was by. I had a feeling it was James Horner because whenever the music evokes such strong emotions from me, it’s him. And sure enough, it was. Two of my absolute favorites together again. James and James, a dynamic duo for sure.

I can’t post a trailer this time, because as I said, they just do it no justice. You’ll have to take my word for it this time.

Hey, have I ever steered you wrong before?

Why Everyone Should See 2012 (The Movie)

18 Nov

I saw the new film, 2012, last Saturday. It arrived in theaters the day before that. My friend and I waited in line for several minutes, only to find out that our showing had already been sold out.

We bought tickets in advance for the next showing (10pm). When we got in the theater, about 20 minutes before the PREVIEWS were about to begin, it was already packed. I can only assume that showing was sold out as well.

Regardless of whether or not you think the world is going to end in 2012, you should see this movie. EVERYONE should see this movie.

And no, not because the special effects are cool (even though they are).

You should see this movie because it truly makes you think. I won’t give away the story line (other than that the world ends and all), but it really makes you re-think any outstanding grudges you may have with people. It makes you realize that we have, as a whole, stopped being human beings and started acting like animals. We don’t care who we go to war with and who we kill, who we give special treatment to and who we leave to die.

It really made me think. It made me evaluate all my relationships and any fights I had recently. It made me think that I don’t want to wait until it’s too late… to tell someone I care, or that I’m sorry, or that I forgive them.

WATCH this movie. You’ll see what I mean.

It’s hard to write about it without giving it away. WATCH this movie and post your thoughts in the comments section. I’d love to read them.

Two previews for this movie are below! The first one is a longer one… the second one illustrates some of the points I made above.  And about 50 more previews for this film can be found on YouTube

This Is It

9 Nov

I went to see Michael Jackson’s This is It tonight. It was very well done given the circumstances under which it was created. Since it was never intended for public viewing, I’d say they did a fantastic job of putting it together FOR the public. It would have been a great tour.

I know there are a lot of mixed feelings about Michael Jackson and things he may or may not have done, but all those things aside, the man had a great message that a lot of people overlook. Man in the Mirror has ALWAYS been one of my favorite songs because it’s got a great message that most people forget about, and that’s sad.

I’m not sure how much longer the film is going to be in theaters, but I highly recommend you see it, regardless of how you feel about Michael Jackson. It’s an experience and if you take the time to pay attention to the message, you just might walk away a better person.

Updates

16 Aug

I saw The Time Traveler’s Wife on Friday… and I thought it was wonderful. I’ve heard a lot of complaints that people who read the book hated the movie.. but that’s exactly why I waited. I plan on starting the book tonight, actually. I also heard a lot of complaints that there were too many “nude” scenes… but I’ve got to say, that’s part of the story and it wasn’t anything obscene… it wasn’t like soft core porn or anything like that..it was very tastefully done. I definitely recommend seeing the movie if you haven’t read the book… and then I recommend reading the book as I know it will be wonderful as well!

Amie’s benefit was yesterday… and it was, ultimately, a success. We raised a decent amount of money selling tickets… and then the winner of the tractor donated it back to Amie, so she got the worth of the tractor as well, which is wonderful.

I went to my first ever swap meet with Michael today.. it was a VW specific one… and Mike bought me a tye dye shirt… so I’m embracing my inner hippie. That was a good time.

We’re leaving tomorrow for Mertly Beach for a week and a half.. give or take a day or two. I’m REALLY excited about that because we’ve got a beach house… and I rarely travel far (except when it’s with Mike’s family… we went to California a few years ago… and we’re going to St. Marteen next year). Mike’s new computer is supposed to come tomorrow too so I’m pretty excited about that. I think he’s more excited that he can plug his new iPod touch into it so he can play with that… (he’s been waiting for the computer to sync the iPod)

All that being said… I will most likely not be posting while away since I’ve also just gotten my summer assignments…. wonderful timing indeed. But I promise I’ll make up for it by posting some wonderful pictures when I get back.

I also noticed that I said wonderful far too many times in this post… I need a new word, I think.

Half Blood Prince

16 Jul

***Possible Spoilers if you have yet to read the book/see the movie****

Yes, I saw it.

And I LOVED it. It was spectacular. I was most anticipating the scene in the cave when Harry and Dumbledore were retrieving the horcrux, and I was very pleased with how they chose to portray it.

I laughed, mostly at Rupert Grint’s humor… (that’s Ron if you don’t know) and when Harry drank his “liquid luck’.

I jumped when the corpses came out of the water during the cave scene.

I blinked away tears when Snape killed Dumbledore.

All the elements of a truly brilliant film.

Yes, they left out some very key elements, but I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt since they’re splitting the 7th book into two movies.

If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

15 Jul

Call me a loser, dork, whatever the Harry Potter equivalent to a Trekie is, I am going CRAZY just knowing that I haven’t seen the new HP movie yet. Literally, crazy. Like a junkie unable to get their fix. And I don’t want to supplement it by reading the book because that will only make the movie suck. I made that mistake with OOTP, I re-read it right before the film came out, and was terribly disappointed because they changed/left out SO much. Watching OOTP now, though, it is a wonderful film.. because the whole story is not fresh fresh fresh in my head.

Now understand this, I am absolutely not ashamed that I am a Harry Potter fan, especially since the books came out when I was very young. I know a lot of people try to pretend they’re not into that stuff now that they’re “grown up and mature,” but I say eff that. If you loved something when you were young, you’re still going to love it. Like all the Disney movies. The Lion King still makes me cry, and yes, I try to watch at least one Disney movie each year.

Regardless, I have decided that I am going to see the earliest showing of HP6 tomorrow morning, otherwise I just might go completely insane. The Kicker? I’m going by myself. Why I don’t care: well, I think you get that by this whole post.
